Aku no Hana

Disbelief, shock, … I was appalled upon watching the first scenes of “Aku no Hana”, the new anime based on the “惡の華” manga by Oshimi Shuuzou. Spotted some screen captures along with the negative buzz online earlier, but was clinging to the hope those were simply a few botched frames, which can happen to any show.

One could suggest the animation style used by studio Zexcs might be a deliberate artistic choice to emphasize the characters or story, but only in a few scenes does the background offer decent art that emphasizes the dark, foreboding gloom of the story itself. In all other scenes the background, character animation, especially animation of facial features is horrible.

If the goal was to offer realistic looking visuals then opting for live action would have been better, if they wanted to go for more stylized, alternative looking animation then a studio like Shaft would be a better choice to tackle this project.

Admittedly, my poor impression of “Aku no Hana” could be due to the fact I personally had high expectations of this show. Still, having read through parts of the manga’s middle school arc, am saddened to see a good, solid manga with a potent story and fascinating characters receive such poor treatment as an anime adaptation.

Don’t think I’ll be able to endure watching any more of the “Aku no Hana” anime, instead my advice to anyone interested in this story is to read the original manga instead.
