Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! OVA

The “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” anime was a good reminder for me that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, or in this case, judge an anime by its first episode, and that you should watch it with the correct perspective and expectations.

Was not enthusiastic about “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” when it originally began to air, wrote it off as a disappointing show with poor animation and comedy that just didn’t seem to work.

However, gave it another chance later on after reading positive comments online that “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” was actually a hilarious parody of the ‘otaku protagonist finds himself in a fantasy world to embark on an adventure’ genre that has been quite popular the past years.

Approaching it expecting a slapstick comedy full of weirdo characters that are more often totally opposite of the usual standard hero cast, exhibiting quirky behavior and even downright foul character traits, turns this anime from a mediocre mess into pure comedy heaven.

From purposely using a slightly different animation and character design style, with facial expressions that are usually just a bit off, and main characters that rack up unpleasant traits, “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” is at times a brilliant parody.

Being an OVA episode, the creators took the opportunity to make it a more ecchi one, yet they did so in typical “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” style by letting the viewers indulge themselves while also mocking that same fanservice it flaunts, as the show doesn’t take itself too serious, nor does it shy from taking jabs at typical anime tropes.

You can watch “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” on Crunchyroll.
