Also known as “Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation-”, was looking forward to this new autumn anime based on the “櫻子さんの足下には死体が埋まっている” mystery novels written by Outa Shiori.
The plot premise suggests this might be a rather unique show, and after seeing the promotional trailer a few weeks ago, knew I definitely had to watch this anime. Not unlike “Hyouka”, “Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru” mixes mystery and detective elements, has interesting characters whose interaction is full of depth thanks to solid dialogue and excellent visuals.
Although am confident several characters from the supporting cast will interact with main characters such that those scenes provide plenty of character development and witty dialogue, one of the primary appeals of this series and a key to its success for me is the bond between Sakurako and Shoutarou.
There is lots of chemistry between the eccentric Sakurako and younger Shoutarou, their verbal banter similarly entertaining and intriguing to the interaction between Chitanda and Oreki from “Hyouka” and the verbal sparring of Holo and Lawrence in “Spice And Wolf”. Sincerely hope the rest of this series continues on that trend of having such dialogue between its main characters.
Was struck by Itou Shizuka’s voice work as Sakurako, she perfectly embodies the characters’ personality and how she voices Sakurako combined with the character’s design, is somewhat reminiscent of Haruka from “Amagami SS”, though what would be an older and darker version then of course.
Animation by studio Troyca is quite good, especially so in key scenes and with some striking backgrounds throughout the episode.
Definitely watching the rest of “Sakurako-san no Ashimoto ni wa Shitai ga Umatteiru” and I do recommend it to those of you looking for a more serious anime to watch that isn’t too dramatic either, but rather builds on character interaction and dialogue.
You can watch “Beautiful Bones -Sakurako’s Investigation-” on Crunchyroll.
