A new anime season is about to begin, so I had a look at the new series lined up for summer and here’s my picks for the new season, which includes shows that I will definitely watch as well as shows that I will simply try out to determine if they are good and entertaining.
Am looking forward the most to “New Game!!”, the second season of the anime based on the four-panel manga featuring the daily life of a high school graduate starting her career at a game development company. Absolutely love the first “New Game!” anime, it provided excellent comedy, was full of cute girls and had plenty of suggestive shoujo-ai fanservice, hence I can’t wait for the sequel to show us more of Aoba and the Eagle Jump staff’s silly shenanigans.
While “New Game!” features superficial shoujo-ai fanservice, am hoping the “Netsuzou Trap -NTR-” anime will give us an actual, serious yuri story with compelling characters and plot development, without devolving into a nonsensical comedy, superficial ecchi fanservice or being overly dramatic.
There’s no doubt I will add “Aho Girl” to my weekly watch list. This new comedy short series is based on a four-panel manga by Hiroyuki, creator of the hilarious “Doujin Work” and “Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to” manga that were already adapted into anime. If its promotional video is any indication, it will be unquestionably a hilarious slapstick comedy filled with quirky characters.
The isekai genre is still booming, unfortunately many anime in this genre are mediocre to downright disappointing adaptations. However, have a good feeling about “Isekai Shokudou”, its plot premise and promotional videos look very promising, the story seems to shift focus more towards cuisine and character interaction instead of the usual fantasy based action plots. Must admit I hope this will be akin to an isekai version of “Koufuku Graffiti”.
After monster girl series like “Monster Musume no Iru Nichijou” set the trend for franchises featuring monster girls to be mostly ecchi fanservice series, am curious to discover what the “Centaur no Nayami” anime will bring. Having read some of the original manga, believe it has tremendous potential with its slice-of-life tale of monster girls trying to live ordinary lives, it could be a breath of fresh air for a genre regrettably limited to ecchi fanservice or action shows. Some of the original manga’s chapters featured surprising deeper political and sociological themes.
Enjoyed the surprisingly fun and refreshing “Oshiete! Gyrauko-chan” anime so plan to sample a few episodes of “Hajimete no Gal”. Remain hopeful it may deliver similar comedy and be more than meets the eye, although its promotional videos suggests it could alas be a run-of-the-mill mediocre ecchi fanservice comedy.
Another comedy short that looks interesting is “Tsurezure Children”, while likely a more typical romantic comedy, the promotional video really appealed to me and seems this show might have endearing characters and plenty of cute, albeit typical scenes.
Will likely check out “Gamers!” too, the character design style and plot premise look interesting enough to sample a few episodes to discover what this anime will really be like.
Definitely plan to watch “Fate/Apocrypha”, the anime based on the light novel series set in Type Moon’s Fate universe but in an alternate world from the original “Fate/stay night” story. Hope it will deliver the same level of epic fantasy action that the “Fate/ stay night: Unlimited Blade Works” and “Fate/Zero” anime achieved, although am concerned that the many characters in “Fate/Apocrypha” might make it difficult to see each of them fully developed onscreen.
Although tournament or competitive sports anime are not the style of shows I personally like to watch, do plan on giving “Ballroom e Youkoso” a try considering am not uninterested in competitive dancing compared to basketball, figure skating or volleyball. Plus, its promotional video looked promising and full of energy.
There’s a few other anime that seem interesting enough to sample the first episodes of, but I plan to keep my list of weekly shows to watch limited to well under a dozen.
Next to these new anime series, am looking forward to the “A-Channel: Nabo wo Tabyou”, “Kobayashi-san Chi no Maiddragon” and “Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo!” OVA and “Seitokai Yakuindomo” movie that are scheduled for release this summer.
