Anime spring season 2017

The spring anime season is here! Ended up following less series this past season than I had originally planned to watch, so selected under a dozen new shows to sample this spring.

Am curious about studio PA Works new original anime project “Sakura Quest”. The promotional video boldly advertises it as following in the footsteps of the studio’s terrific creations “Hanasaku Iroha” and “Shirobako”, so “Sakura Quest” will have to meet high expectations it is to live up to these two amazing anime. Hence, I’m curious to see if this new show will be a masterpiece like “Hanasaku Iroha” and “Shirobako”.

Another new anime am keen on watching is “Hinako Note”, the trailer for this adaptation of the four panel manga by Mitsuki suggests it may be the style of heartwarming slice-of-life series that is one of favourite types of anime, like “Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu Ka?” or “Wakaba*Girl”.

“Alice to Zouroku” looks like a promising anime with a rather unique premise, it could be a lovely slice-of-life comedy filled with plenty of subtle emotion like “Flying Witch” or “Barakamon”.

Romance anime in a school setting are not the genre of series I tend to watch, will check out “Tsuki ga Kirei” though. The promotional video for this new original anime project from studio Feel looked promising and the character animation style seems to be more unique, perhaps this show will bring us viewers something fresh.

One of two sequel anime I am interested in is “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata ♭”, the second season of the light novel adaptation of a fervent otaku trying to create a visual novel game. Of course, the fellow students he enlists to help him are all beautiful girls vying for his affection. The first season was rather unremarkable, the usual harem story with all the typical overused elements, but its main heroine Megumi was an intriguing character so am keen on seeing more of her character’s evolution in this story.

Another sequel I may watch is the long anticipated second season of “Shingeki no Kyojin”. Am curious if the anime will diverge from the manga considering the original story has taken some incredible, thrilling plot twists. While the first adaptation was surprisingly good at capturing the manga’s dark, raw atmosphere, personally I might opt to just keep track of the manga instead.

Although it could be a rather ecchi show considering it is based on an adult manga, will check out “Souryo to Majiwaru Shikiyoku no Yoru ni” because its story of romance with plenty of sexuality and passion suggests a refreshing mature take on these themes, at least compared to the usual stories of lusting teens seen in too many manga and anime that quickly become incredulous or feel unrealistic.

While it may end up being a typical ecchi siscon/brocon anime with plenty of silly fanservice or improper comedy moments, will give “Eromanga Sensei” a try although I remain apprehensive about this show considering the light novel it is based on is written by Fushimi Tsukasa, the author of “Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii Wake ga Nai”, a harem franchise I am not fond of.

Even though it offered nothing particularly stellar, the first “Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka” anime was a fun fantasy series with plenty of action, quirky characters and entertaining fanservice. While part of the bulk of generic fantasy anime, it still offered viewers sufficient entertainment, so am curious to watch the spin-off “Dungeon ni Deai o Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden: Sword Oratoria” that focuses on some of the story’s supporting characters.

Another fantasy series that caught my attention is “Granblue Fantasy The Animation”, the adaptation of the popular mobile phone role-playing game. Its first two episodes actually already aired earlier this year and while it seemed a fairly straightforward, typical fantasy story, it was quite entertaining and suggested they will build the story up in a complex, unique realm.

Based on Kotobukiya’s mecha girl model kits, plan to give the first few episodes of “Frame Arms Girl” a try to see what the anime will be all about. Although I may end up betrayed by my own expectations of this show considering I got intrigued by its promotional video that showed a female protagonist, this lead me to think it may be a welcome departure of the overused plot of a sleazy otaku lusting over a female model, android or other personification. Instead, am hoping the anime’s story will bring us a protagonist that discovers and delves into a new hobby.

Which anime are you watching this spring?
