Was keen on checking out “This Art Club Has a Problem!”, the new summer anime based on the “この美術部には問題がある!” comedy manga by Imigimuru. Although it is labelled as a comedy featuring the rather classic setting, revolving around the daily activities of the quirky members of a school club, the fact it is about an art club had me wonder if it might be more slice-of-life oriented like the lovely “Sketchbook ~full color’S~”.
Having watched the episodes that aired so far, must conclude that “Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!” is not a slice-of-life anime similar to “Sketchbook ~full color’S~” at all, but instead it is a hilarious school comedy about an art club full of oddball characters, albeit all rather typical and not a very novel anime.
Therein lies my personal disappointment with this series -if I would word it so explicitly- but the characters, situations and jokes don’t feel refreshing, it does lack originality. However, let that not influence you to dismiss “Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!”. Even though I may lament the fact this anime is unoriginal, it has nonetheless provided plenty of laughter every week and makes me look forward to each new episode.

The various quirky characters are still well balanced, with main female lead Mizuki just perfect as the seemingly only normal, sane member of the art club but of course she can be just as weird, especially with her tsundere behaviour towards Subaru.
Tend to personally enjoy shows that are driven by the unique dynamic of a group of oddball characters who are up to no good with their silly shenanigans, however another main comedy and driving plot thread in “Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru!” is Mizuki’s crush on Subaru, which spawns the typical scenes and jokes.
Animation by studio feel is quite good, with most apparent care going to key scenes and close-ups of the characters, especially when they focus on female characters like Mizuki, Colette or Yumeko who do provide moe fanservice.
It might not be like “K-ON!”, “Inou-Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de” or “Netoge no Yome wa Onnanoko ja Nai to Omotta?” but if you’re looking for a solid comedy featuring a group of quirky characters in a club setting, then I definitely recommend you try this show.
