Adapting the visual novel “少女たちは荒野を目指す” into anime form, was interested in watching “Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu” as the plot premise suggested it might be akin to harem comedy “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata”.
Next to the romance or harem genre elements, both stories share a similar setting of a school club focused on making a visual novel. While the “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata” anime turned out to be more of a typical harem comedy, was hoping that “Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu” would offer a more serious take on this type of story.
Based on the first episode, it looked like “Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu” could be a good mix between “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata” and “Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru”. Especially main character Buntarou showed more promise as a male lead compared to the overly typical harem lead and consequently disappointing character Saekano’s Tomoya was.
Unfortunately, after a decent first episode and showing good potential, felt let down by the following episodes of “Shoujo-tachi wa Kouya wo Mezasu”. The show seemed to fall apart upon itself and soon devolved into using one anime cliche after another, fast descending into mediocre storytelling.
While I shall not go as far as to label this series as bad, especially when compared to “Saenai Heroine no Sodatekata” which wasn’t particularly stellar either, I did stop watching the show and feel little interest to keep up with it.
Might convince myself to give it a second chance and watch it someday in the future, but compared to plenty of other anime airing this season, I don’t feel it’s worth my time now.
