On a whim, watched the first episode of “Oshiete! Galko-chan”, the anime based on the “おしえて！ギャル子ちゃん” comedy manga by Suzuki Kenya. Was pleasantly surprised by this show and hope its opening episode is a trendsetter for the rest.
Considering the show is centered around the silly and often unrefined daily conversations three friends have in class, there isn’t much of a plot and “Oshiete! Galko-chan” leans towards the slice-of-life genre due to its focus on the idle banter and comical shenanigans of these high school girls.
“Oshiete! Galko-chan” surprised me by its blatant, comical use of stereotype characters. Their names plainly announce it actually, main characters Galko, Otako and Ojou are typical renderings of the gyaru fashionable girl, the otaku and the proper ojousama template characters.

The show manages to make these near-caricature characters work well though, in part thanks to their interaction and verbal banter. Don’t expect innocent and cute conversations like those in “Aiura” or “Yuyushiki” though, because the topics Galko, Otako and Ojou discuss are far more uncouth.
The animation of “Oshiete! Galko-chan” by Studio Feel, who also produce “Dagashi Kashi” this season, is excellent. It is nice to see an anime with short running time achieve such quality as quite often they tend to feature less exquisite animation.
Although the studio does seem to forego using detailed backgrounds but most often opts for plain backgrounds, no doubt so most production focus can into the characters.
