Took a day off after getting back from a business trip to go and watch “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”, the seventh chapter in the Star Wars saga which hit theaters worldwide this week. To put my impressions of the movie in one short spoiler-free sentence: it is absolutely epic!
What I enjoyed the most about “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is how they really nailed the atmosphere, making this movie feel so similar to the original trilogy. Sure, there are copious amounts of blatant fanservice but this is never bothersome, nor is the movie so nostalgic that it becomes too melancholic.
Always been an avid fan of Star Wars, but lost touch with the franchise shortly after “Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith”. Considering criticism that the prequel trilogy felt too different, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” had to bring audiences back to where it all began and successfully link to the original trilogy.
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is a great Star Wars movie, yet in terms of storytelling and character development, it is obvious that its main goal is to bridge the gap between the original trilogy and introduce the next generation of characters that will now embark on new adventures. I expect the future movies can offer more potent and refreshing storytelling as this film is -and needed to be- a junction point.
Any fan will no doubt gladly overlook the movie’s flaws -such as it being rather predictable- and relish in seeing a new Star Wars movie that is a great addition to the venerable sci-fi saga. While some may complain about several plot elements or characters being shrouded in darkness, personally was able to appreciate that fact.
I’m already looking forward to the BluRay release as well as the next Star Wars movie!
